Hiking is one of the only ways you can experience the beauty of nature and see some of the most spectacular views this world has to offer, but it can be challenging to reach these wonderful places. It’s heartbreaking to miss out on these once in a lifetime experiences because you’re not physically prepared. I’ve watched close friends go through this on hiking trips, and I don’t want anyone to experience that pain, so I created Trailhead Fitness and the Sofa to Summit Program to properly prepare you for your next hiking adventure.

WHAT DO YOU GET?

The Sofa to Summit Program is a 12-week program that includes:

PILLAR ONE: ENDURANCE

Cardiovascular endurance is vital to hiking and mountaineering success.

Hiking up steep inclines at high altitude with a heavy pack can place a lot of stress on on the cardiovascular system, and if you’re not prepared then it could ruin your chances of a successful hike. This is why developing your cardiovascular endurance is a huge part of the Sofa to Summit Program.

THE FOUR PILLARS OF TRAILHEAD FITNESS

Trailhead Fitness’ Sofa to Summit program is structured around these four pillars:

PILLAR TWO: STRENGTH

Strength training for hiking may seem unnecessary, but it actually can be very useful when used correctly.

Walking up steep inclines, and carrying your pack will become easier and place less stress on the body if your stronger. Strength training is also the primary way to increase tendon and ligament strength, which can reduce the chance of injury during the descent on a hike.

PILLAR THREE: MOBILITY

Mobility is the ability of a joint to move actively through a range of motion.

Steep uneven terrain is very common during hiking, and can force your body into awkward positions. Increased mobility and flexibility can prepare your joints for these unnatural movements and reduce your chance of injury, especially if you slip and fall.

PILLAR FOUR: EXPERIENCE

Since your primary goal is to be fit and strong enough to complete a challenging hike, it’s important to include hiking as part of the program.

The use of timed hikes and weighted hikes gives you experience on the trail and experience carrying your pack, along with gauging your current fitness level.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I have to workout in a gym?

No you don’t have to workout in a gym to follow this program. The program is customized to what you have available. If you have a gym membership then the workouts will include what’s available at the gym. If you don’t have access to workout equipment then your workouts will focus on bodyweight exercises.

Why can’t I just hike for my training?

Hiking is an important part of my training program and is required if you want to gain real world experience, but relying solely on hiking will not improve strength, correct movement imbalances, or assist with injury prevention.

Is it alright if I’m a beginner to hiking and/or exercising?

Of course! The Sofa to Summit program is customized to your level of experience, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned hiker.

What if I want to lose weight or gain muscle?

The Sofa to Summit program is specialized for hiking. Weight loss, improving strength, and gaining muscle may occur as a side effect of the program, but it’s not the primary focus. If you want to achieve any of those goals, then I would recommend another program.

Will I have to follow a diet?

Your diet can have a huge impact on your progress during this program and you’re health overall, but it’s not required. I don’t promote fad diets, or restriction diets. I believe that changing your diet should be a slow and healthy process that fits with your wants and needs.

What if my adventure is planned in the near future (sooner than 12 weeks)?

No worries, I can get you set on a program that will get you the best results with the time you have left.
